Colorful Kentucky Derby Tablescape

Posted by on

Fingers crossed–it looks like we’re going to have a beautiful and sunny First Saturday in May. In honor of the wonderful weather, we thought we’d share a few tips to help make your Kentucky Derby table a real winner this year!

Kentucky Derby is a festive occasion and easily dictates the theme of your table; get creative with a racing or Thoroughbred scheme and don’t be afraid to use a mix of bold, bright colors. Here we used Pomegranate, Inc.’s Pick Six pattern; it reminds us of the post parade of all the bright jockey silks filling the track.

Julep Cups Reimagined

Mint Julep cups may be a famous symbol of the Derby, but they aren’t the best glasses to drink from when eating a meal. Instead, we used them to add height to our place setting, allowing space between the napkin and tablecloth since they are the same pattern. What a fun way to use your items that match!

Our table is long and thin so we wanted to visually carry the eye from end to end. This is especially inviting for guests as they walk out onto the patio and see your table display for the first time. It also creates the illusion that our place setting for six is actually for a much larger party. Mirroring the same green in the Ford Raffia placemats and stemware not only breaks up the pattern but also adds texture and brings out the greens in the floral arrangements.

The seats at this table are squeezed in a bit tight, which is great to encourage conversation between the whole party. We suggest using low flower arrangements in a situation like this so that everyone can easy see across the table to the other guests. When using low arrangements, just remember to include multiple groupings so the tablescape still feels full and inviting.

Run for the Roses

You’ll of course want to include roses in your arrangements because they are the official flower of the Derby, but event planner Melody, of Refined Social Events, suggests mixing and matching them with other seasonal flowers to modernize your florals. Here she used several varieties of ranunculus, roses, tulips and boronia, which she placed into neutral white vases to make the colors pop even more.

We hope everyone has a safe and very happy Derby. May you all pick a winner!
