Elissa’s Mixtape: Funky Seaside Table Inspired by Springsteen

Posted by on

Greetings! My name is Elissa and I work at Pomegranate Inc. as the Website Administrator. What’s that exactly, you might ask? Well, without getting too technical about it, all of the content that you see when you shop on our website — product descriptions, collection assortments, banner copy, special promotions — that’s me! I also help write all of the email blasts that may arrive in your inbox weekly. In fact, if you’ve reached out to us via email, chat or telephone in the last seven months with any questions, you may have talked or typed with me and didn’t even realize it.

And now that the official introductions are out of the way, I want to warmly welcome you to my special corner of the Pom Journal. We’re hoping that our more personal segments like this one will offer you a fun peek behind the curtain of Pomegranate. Plus, it gives us the chance to get to know you a little bit better as well. Outside my time spent at Pomegranate, I’m an avid traveler and music enthusiast. My best trips have always been the ones where I have the opportunity to combine my two passions into a singular experience. And my favorite thing about working for Pom is that our exciting selection of prints allows me to capture the spirit of my travels even when I’m back at home.

Which may lead to your next question… why a mixtape? Or in the parlance of the 21st century… a playlist? Well to quote John Cusack’s character Rob in High Fidelity: “The making of a good compilation tape is a very subtle art. Many dos and don’ts. First of all, you’re using someone else’s poetry to express how you feel. This is a delicate thing.” And secondly, no party or social gathering is complete without great background music!

My most recent trip took me to New York City with my favorite concert companion, my dad. First, we visited The Dakota and the Strawberry Fields memorial in Central Park to honor John Lennon. Next, we explored the Guggenheim to take in Frank Lloyd Wright’s astonishing architectural achievement. However, the primary reason we traveled to The Big Apple was to attend Bruce Springsteen’s highly celebrated one-man show at the Walter Kerr Theatre: Springsteen on Broadway.

Bruce Springsteen Concert

As a live music experience, I can honestly think of none better. The Walter Kerr only holds 975 people — to see a musician (a legend, really) of Springsteen’s status in such an intimate setting was a true gift. There were moments when he addressed the audience, his voice barely above a whisper, without a microphone. The venue was so tiny that we could all hear — and were enrapt by — every single word.

He told touching stories of his childhood growing up with his parents and siblings in Freehold, New Jersey, and regaled us with memories from the earliest days he spent jamming around the beach-side town of Asbury Park with The E Street Band. In between these extremely personal anecdotes, he performed the songs that were given birth by these defining moments in his life. From the time he spent Growin’ Up near the Jersey Shore to the rubber-on-pavement, spirit-to-the-wind anthems of Thunder Road and Born to Run, it was a special selection of the songs that mean the most to him as an artist — and the most to us as his fans.

Funky Seaside Table Setting Inspired by Bruce Springsteen

After returning home, I wanted to recapture the seaside spirit of Springsteen’s youth for my friends and family members who couldn’t experience his phenomenal show first hand. Asbury Park, a Jersey Shore town that was terribly battered by hurricane Sandy, has fortunately seen a revival since the storm. And to me, nothing embodies the “pier lights” and “carnival life” of Asbury Park more than our Exuma Mint Coral Reef print. Originally inspired by the pristine beaches of the Bahamas, its orange and minty hues provide an unconventional — but truly delightful –coastal display.

I prefer to mix prints and tend to shy away from anything too “matchy,” so I paired the Exuma pieces with Pomegranate’s Pink & Green Zig Zag Napkins and Placemats. To me, this fun design perfectly embodies the dizzying sights and sounds of the boardwalk at dusk. I added the Kelly Green Raffia Napkin Rings to complete the look, which layer on great texture as well as color.

The festive table linens, mixed with this special playlist I put together for the occasion, set the mood for a perfect gathering.
