Baltimore is all a buzz this week with Triple Crown hopeful Justify’s run in the Preakness Stakes. And I just love this time of year for the excitement it brings in the horse industry and for all of the excuses it gives me to throw great parties!
Here in Kentucky, it’s not quite Black Eyed Susan season yet, but I wanted to incorporate the famous yellow of Pimlico Park into my Preakness garden party. This new Spring tablecloth with yellow raffia placemats really makes the table bright and fun.
Classic Blue & Yellow
I absolutely adore mixing and matching patterns and colors. For this display, I wanted to use bold blues to accent my main choice of lemony yellow. Incorporating several distinct patterns broke up the brightness of the yellow, while the softness of the blue milk glasses contrasted perfectly with the heavy ceramic vases I used for the center pieces. Matching textures creates a cohesive look, by using the raffia again in the napkin rings I accentuated the organic feel of the placemats. Plus, the silverware mimics the traditional feel of the antique glasses and vases.
I used simple chairs that continued the curved lines of all of the items on the table. Visually, they help tie together the tablescape as a whole.
Fresh Spring Florals
Melody from Refined Social Events arranged my flowers for me as always. She brought in bright yellows and mixed in seasonal blue and whites to add height in the center. She always reminds me not to shy away from matching my florals with the vase or container I’m using. You can actually add height to the piece by continuing the color scheme from the vessel through to the arrangement. These small vases not only help to anchor the larger pieces, but their contrasting colors also guide the eye down the table to the place settings.
